Driving from the South

Leave the M6 at junction 38 Tebay and follow the B6260 through Orton to Appleby.
Drive through Appleby and across the bridge and at the T junction turn left. Follow the road up Battlebarrow, to go under the railway bridge and then under the road bridge (A66). Continue straight ahead for approximately 3 miles along narrow lanes which in many places are single track. When you arrive in Dufton follow the road through the village and down the hill past the cafe and the pub. At the last house on the left as you leave the village, with the Dufton Barn signage, you will see a short farm track to the right of this house with a prominent Visit England blue logo – which leads up to Shepherds View.

Why not stop off at Tebay services CA10 3SB, just past Jn 38, at the renowned Cumbrian farm shop!  Continue your journey by exiting the services past the hotel and head for Orton and the B6260.

Driving from the North

Leave the M6 at junction 40 Penrith. Follow the A66 East toward Scotch Corner. You will pass the entrance to Center Parcs and then a stretch of dual carriageway before you pass Kirkby Thore where the road is single lane and there is a 40 mph average speed camera along this section. Approximately 1/2 mile after this section is a turning on the left to Long Marton and Dufton. Exit here and head along the road to a T junction by the church. Turn left and head into Long Marton. As you enter the village take the first road on the right and then follow this new lane for about 2.5 miles. When you reach a T junction turn right into Dufton and at the first house on the right you will see a short farm track to the right of this house with a prominent Visit England blue logo – which leads up to Shepherds View.

You could add a small detour to your journey by visiting the Rheged Centre CA11 0DQ, including farm shop, shops and cafe.  Part of the  Westmorland Family of service stations you will find it 1 mile West along the A66 off Jn 40.

Driving from the East (A1/M1)

Take the A66 at Scotch Corner and head West toward Penrith. After approximately 25 miles you pass through Warcop and then onto a section of dual carriageway. Within 1 mile take the Appleby exit and head into the town. Pass by the bridge on your left and follow the road up Battlebarrow, to go under the railway bridge and then under the road bridge (A66). When you arrive in Dufton follow the road through the village and down the hill past the cafe and the pub. A great stopping off point is Mainsgill Farmshop DL11 7PN.  Offering an extensive farm shop and quality gifts you will find them approximately 4.5 miles along the A66 from Scotch Corner on the left hand side heading West.

Walking from High Cup Nick

Follow the Pennine Way down into Dufton.  Walk through the village and pass the Stag Inn on your right.  At the bottom of the hill you will see a detached house called Hall Croft with black iron railings and the Dufton Barn Holidays sign-post.  As you pass by this house you will see a short concrete farm track.  Follow this track up the side of the house to a small court-yard.  Access to the Pennine Potting Shed is between Hall Croft and Shepherds View through the garden gate to your left.

Walking from Cross Fell

Follow the Pennine Way down into Dufton.  You finally pass through Coatsykes Farm and onto a gravel farm track.  Follow the track in to Dufton, ignoring the Pennine Way sign that you pass on your left.  When you reach the road follow it up into the village.  At the first house you reach on the right you will see a short concrete farm track at the side with a prominent Visit England blue logo.  Follow this track up the side of the house to a small court-yard.  Access to the Pennine Potting Shed is between Hall Croft and Shepherds View through the garden gate to your left.
